Objective
The aim of present study was to investigate phenotypic diversity, grouping and evaluate various traits between some of bell pepper inbred lines to identify superior inbred lines.
Materials and Methods
Seeds of 68 pure bell pepper lines, derived from a foreign cultivar using the single seed descent method, were cultivated in a completely randomized design (CRD) with two replications at the research greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman. Sixteen quantitative and qualitative traits were evaluated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and cluster analysis of the data were performed using SPSS software, and principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted using XLSTAT software.
Results
The results of the analysis of variance revealed that the bell pepper inbred lines exhibited significant differences in all phenological, morphological, and agronomic traits, except for fruit peduncle thickness, fruit peduncle length, pericarp thickness, and fruit number. The results of mean comparison indicated that line 21 had the longest duration for all evaluated phenological traits, including days to flowering, days to fruiting, and days to maturity. It also recorded the highest values for fruit weight and diameter. Lines 12 and 13 exhibited the greatest plant height and number of nodes. Traits such as days to flowering, days to fruiting, plant height, fruit length, and fruit diameter showed high heritability. In the principal component analysis, the first component was designated as the "plant phenology component" and the second component as the "fruit size and marketability component." Cluster analysis for phenotypic traits divided the studied inbred lines into four distinct clusters. The first cluster comprised 24 inbred lines, which were mostly late-maturing and had medium to low fruit weight and diameter; these lines also had medium plant height. The second, third, and fourth clusters contained 10, 15, and 19 inbred lines, respectively. According to the cluster analysis for qualitative traits, the inbred lines were classified into three distinct groups. The first cluster included 25 lines (37.3%), the second cluster contained 15 lines (22.4%), and the third cluster comprised 27 lines (40.3%).
Conclusion
Based on the obtained results, selection based on traits such as plant height, days to flowering, days to fruiting, and fruit length and diameter is effective for advancing bell pepper breeding objectives. Line 21 in terms of all phenological traits and lines 12 and 13 in terms of plant height are suggested in future studies for hybrid seed production.
