Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the most important summer vegetable crops in the world, due to its high nutritional value, wide phenotypic diversity, and diverse applications in fresh eating and processing industries, and plays an important role in ensuring food security and agricultural economics. Given the genetic complexity of fruit yield and its susceptibility to multiple genetic and environmental factors, identifying key traits affecting fruit yield and quality is a prerequisite for improving selection efficiency in bell pepper breeding programs. Accordingly, the present study aimed to comprehensively study quantitative and qualitative traits and identify indicators affecting fruit yield in bell pepper hybrid genotypes. This study was conducted as a greenhouse experiment in a randomized complete block design with eight replications in the research greenhouse of Afzalipour Research Institute, Shahid Bahonar University, Kerman. In this study, ten hybrid bell pepper genotypes were evaluated for a set of morphological, phenological, functional, quality and colorimetric traits. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, Duncan's range comparison test, correlation analysis, stepwise regression and path coefficient analysis. The results of analysis of variance showed statistically significant differences between genotypes for all studied traits, indicating significant genetic diversity and high potential of genotypes for use in breeding programs. Among red peppers, Nirvin and G20 genotypes were considered suitable for the fresh market due to their desirable quality characteristics, while Mars and Andromeda genotypes were recommended for the processing and transformation industries due to their darker color and suitable color indices. In the yellow pepper group, the Citrin genotype showed the highest potential for the fresh market due to its vivid and attractive color, while the Harmony and Lemonchelo genotypes had the highest fruit yield and were also early maturing genotypes. Correlation analysis showed that fruit yield had a positive and significant correlation with single fruit weight (0.73), number of fruits (0.90) and stem diameter (0.61), while it showed a negative and significant correlation with the length of the fourth and fifth internodes (-0.73). The results of stepwise regression and path analysis indicated that the traits of fruit number, single fruit weight, soluble solids and light index (L) were the most important traits affecting fruit yield. Overall, the results of this study showed that indirect selection based on single fruit weight and number of fruits can play an effective role as efficient selection indicators in breeding programs.
